During a violent storm, Harvey falls from the deck of the passenger ship he was on into a fishing boat.
Fifteen-year-old Harvey, talking about his father's mines, sawmills, and ships, asks those on the boat to take him to New York, where his family lives. Everyone, especially the ship's captain, Disko, thinks the boy is lying.

Harvey, who is also close friends with the captain's son, telegraphs his friends, inviting them to work on their ships after returning to America with his father.
