During a violent storm, Harvey falls from the deck of the passenger ship he was traveling on into a fishing boat.
Fifteen-year-old Harvey tells the crew about his father’s mines, lumber mills, and ships, asking them to take him to New York, where his family is located. Everyone—especially the ship’s captain, Disko—believes the boy is lying.
Harvey works alongside these fishermen for months. The experiences he faces cause him to mature quickly. The spoiled child who first boarded the ship has been replaced by a serious young man who loves his job and enjoys hard work; he is now a captain-in-the-making...
Months later, they return to the city with the ship’s hold full of fish. Harvey sends a telegram to his father to let him know he is alive. Having also become close friends with the captain’s son, Harvey sends a telegram to his friends after returning to America with his father, inviting them to come work on his family's ships. The telegram reads: “The seas are waiting for young, Captains Courageous like us...”
